Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly are you?
We get this question a lot actually! We are a bunch of things, but to sum it all up, we are a sensory-friendly salon, bookstore, and event space for ALL ages.
Ok…why are you THIS?
We get that question a lot as well. So your typical salon is going to have a lot of noises, smells, and overall can be a little overstimulating for some people, particularly children. By incorporating events, multiple imaginative play spaces, and a diverse set of books to peruse and buy, we hope to create an almost Pavlovian response to our space, where kids recognize the fun they can have here, and will remember their hair salon as an exciting place to hang out.
Where on earth did this idea come from?
A few years ago, one of the owners, Bess, was in the Netherlands with her family on a vacation, and they came across a store that was part kid salon, part boutique, part hang out spot for parents and young kids. Bess kept saying how much she wished something like this existed back at home. Long after the trip had ended, Bess couldn’t get this idea out of her head, and when a storefront became available in Norwood, a spot so perfect it couldn’t be passed up, she and the other two brains of the operation, Anna and Sarah, jumped on the opportunity. The rest, as they say, is history!
So do you only do kids hair?
NOPE! We do hair for all ages! Whether you’re a parent with a young kid who desperately needs their first hair cut, or a caretaker who needs a place for their kid to play while they get their hair trimmed, we have and will always cut hair for all ages. Please see our salon page for more details about what services we offer.
Do your prices differ based on gender?
NOPE. In fact, that’s illegal, so definitely not. Prices are based on age only because hair textures change as we age, and that can differentiate appointment times more than anything gender related.
Do you do anything special for a first ever hair cut?
Oh yes we do! Without giving too much away, we make sure grown ups get to walk away with a little sentimental souvenir to always remember their kid’s first cut. Just make sure you select the option on our form that asks about first cut!
Do you work with kids who are considered special needs?
Absolutely! We offer many add-ons like weighted vests, face shields, weighted buddies (dinosaurs, unicorns, and bears, OH MY!) and SO much more. Many of our clients benefit from accommodations at school and home, so we strive to offer the same or similar accommodations here, which are all free, with the exception of items you can buy to take home. The special needs community already has an unfair financial burden placed on them, and this is why our accommodations are offered at no additional price. Check out our full list on our forms when booking an appointment online. Our store is also handicap accessible.
Why do you have most of your books facing out?
We always say, “don’t judge a book by it’s cover,” but let’s be real, when it comes to books, a cover can actually tell us a lot! We have our books face out for this reason. You’re more likely to find something interesting if you can see the front more clearly.
Do you have books for all ages?
Yes and proudly! We have our books sorted from bottom to top, youngest to oldest. So our bottom shelf is for our littlest friends, and the books all the way at the top are for grown-ups. But these are just suggestions. You may find yourself reading books from any of our shelves!
What’s with the policy about hair tangles?
So this is a tricky subject, and we fully understand that tangles happen to all ages and all hair types, even despite all attempts to avoid them, so know that you won’t be judged by us. If you think you or your child’s hair has matting and tangles that require more attention and work, we would require a consultation first to assess what needs to be done. For any regular hair cut appointment, we ask that caretakers fully brush and detangle their child’s hair before their appointment. If the appointment goes over the allotted time because of tangles, we will have to charge you for any extra time needed. If this does happen, we’ll make sure the adult knows the drill, so that there are no surprise charges.
What’s with the additional 3% fee added to purchases?
Ah! So glad you asked about that! That is our wellness fee. For every purchase, a 3% fee is added, and that money is put aside for our staff in times of crisis or need. Whether that looks like sick days, bereavement, time off for mental health, or something else, we take the well-being of our staff seriously.
Are you LGBTQIA+ friendly?
100% we are! We are actually queer owned, and you’ll see from our book selection, diversity and representation matter here. If you consider yourself part of the LGBTQIA+ community, you are safe here.
There’s an option on the salon form to write in pronouns? Are you really serious about that?
Uh YES WE ARE SERIOUS ABOUT THAT. Please be accurate with this information, as it helps our staff give you and your child the best care possible. We also ask that you not make a joke out of this. We do not think it’s clever or cheeky to write something silly like “doctor” or “sassy boss baby.” If we do see that on your appointment form, it is our policy to use “they/them” pronouns in absentia. And if you’re unsure, ask your kid!
I want to complain about the “woke” books you sell; who can I email?
We understand. Please email info@moonlilyboutique.com and we’ll be sure to email you back a receipt for a donation made to the Trevor Project, in your name. Does that answer your question?
Uh oh, I think I forgot something in the car, can I leave my kid here while I go and grab it really quick?
Absolutely NOT. We are not a day care, and we are not able to look after your kid, doesn’t matter for how long. If you leave your child in the store and we don’t know when you will be returning, not only will we give them endless candy, we will be forced to call the authorities and report an abandonment. Full stop.
Are you hiring?
Send us an email or call and ask! We might just be, depending on the time of year.
UGH my kid is sick and I need to cancel! Are you going to charge me?
All of us at Moon Lily get that sick happens, and kids are so prone to these things! We prefer to leave germs at home too, so we appreciate if you can call and let us know as soon as you can, so that we can open the spot up to someone else. So long as you call us ahead of your appointment, we won’t charge you! BUT if you no-show, we will charge you the full amount. So please, don’t hesitate to call us!
